Thinking Critically about Amos (homework #2)

In class today we read together Amos 1-2.  For homework I would like you to read these chapters again and comment on the following question:
  • What is the most important word in this passage and why do you think that is the most important word?
Read over the comments of your classmates and reply to one that you like by stating another reason why that word could be the most important word in the passage.  You might say something like, "Another reason why that word might be the most important word is..."

Have fun!

  1. I believe that the most important word in both Amos 1 and 2 is devour. My reasoning is because it is used 4 times in Amos chapter 1 and 2 times in Amos chapter 2. Because it is used so much in both two chapters, I think that God is trying to make a point about the fact that because of all of the things he talks about in both chapters, the consequence is being devoured.

    1. I agree. This is also an important word throughout Amos 1 and Amos 2.

    2. i also agree with Jon's point. The word must be important if God used it 4 times.

  2. I believe that the most important word in Amos 1-2 is transgessions. It is repeated throughout the chapters to display it's significance and ultimately causes God to Judge and punish Damascus.

  3. In my opinion I believe that the most important word is punishment because it is repeated more than five times throughout Amos 1 and Amos 2. It also allows the reader to understand what is happening, which is punishment.

  4. I think it's 'will'. Even though it's a small, insignificant-looking word, it shows that these are all promises that God intends to fulfill in the future, but He hasn't yet. Also, He's not saying "maybe this could happen..." but "this WILL happen," emphasized by the repeated phrase "I will not revoke the punishment."

    1. I never thought a small word like that could be the most important word but now I see that it could be and I agree it is important to this passage

  5. I think that the most important word in Amos 1 and 2 is devour because of how furious He was with the other tribes. In the 2 chapters, God is punishing many different tribes for all the sin that they committed. He became so furious with everything that he saw that he just wanted to remove the tribes altogether by devouring them all with fire.

  6. i believe that the most important word in Amos 1-2 is "transgressions" because it is used eight times through out these chapters. if a word is used that many times it must be important.

  9. I think that the most important word would be transgressions because it is mentioned repeatedly and it goes with the theme of the passage which was that the nations were sinful and had many transgressions and God judged them.

  10. i think that "transgressions" is the most important word. it is said 8 times in thse 2 chpaters, and usually when the bible keeps repeating something that means it's important. also another reason i think it's important is because the whole reason God is even saying any of this is because of the people's sins and transgressions.

  17. I believe that the most important word is transgressions, because it is repeated several times throughout the chapters. normally when a word is repeated it is to show emphasis. so i believe that the author of Amos is trying to show that transgressions is a word that the reader needs to be paying attention to.
